Mortgage Postcard Scam
Texas First has been made aware of a postcard scam targeting homeowners with claims of a time-sensitive matter related to their mortgage. These postcards, which may appear in a variety of colors and designs, are being mailed to consumers across the country and often urge recipients to call a phone number immediately.
Please be advised: These postcards are not from Texas First and are not affiliated with any legitimate financial institution. In some cases, the mailers include fine-print disclaimers stating that the sender is not affiliated with the mortgage lender referenced in the communication.
How Did They Get My Information?
Texas First is committed to protecting our customers’ personal information. We do not sell or distribute member information to unaffiliated third parties, and we would never send a postcard requesting that you call us regarding an urgent mortgage matter.
Unfortunately, certain mortgage-related information may be available through public records, regardless of which lender or financial institution you use. Scammers can use this publicly available information to create mailings that appear legitimate.
If the postcard includes an account number or loan reference, compare it carefully with your actual mortgage records. Discrepancies can be a strong indication that the communication is fraudulent.
What Should I Do If I Receive One?
If you receive one of these postcards:
- Do not call the phone number listed.
- Do not provide personal, financial, or mortgage information.
- Do not respond to requests for immediate action.
- Dispose of the postcard as you would other unsolicited mail.
Scammers may use live representatives or automated systems to collect information from unsuspecting consumers. Any information you provide could be used for fraudulent purposes.
